What is the food wheel for?

It’s 7 p.m., everyone is hungry and the group chat keeps asking the same thing: what should I eat tonight? This food wheel ends the loop in about five seconds. Spin it and it lands on one of 30 dinner ideas, from pizza and pad Thai to chicken tagine, lentil soup and an honest fridge-leftovers night.

Dinner is a small decision that always shows up when you are tired, and letting the wheel pick ends the back-and-forth. Watch your first reaction to the result, too: a little sigh usually means you already knew what you wanted.

Delete the dishes you never cook and add family classics: your version is saved on your device for tomorrow. Down to two options? The yes or no wheel or a quick coin flip settles it.

How to use the what to eat wheel

  1. Pick a chip above the wheel to match your evening: All, Quick, Healthy, Budget or Delivery.
  2. Open the editor to cross out what nobody feels like and to add your own dishes, one per line.
  3. Press Spin, tap the wheel or flick it with your finger.
  4. Agree on the rule before the wheel stops: one re-spin allowed, then the result is final.

30 dinner ideas included

The list mixes weeknight comfort food, takeout favorites and dishes from around the world, whether you cook or order. Names stay open: “Chicken curry” can be a green curry or a butter chicken, “Breakfast for dinner” pancakes or a shakshuka.

Quick, healthy, budget and delivery versions

The chips filter the wheel without leaving the page:

  • Quick: 9 dinners ready in about 15 minutes, like an omelet, quesadillas, fried rice or a veggie stir-fry.
  • Healthy: 12 lighter meals built on vegetables, fish or pulses, from pho to falafel wraps.
  • Budget: 15 cheap dinners such as chili, spaghetti bolognese, lentil soup and leftovers.
  • Delivery: 13 dishes that are easy to order, from sushi to dumplings.

A dish can sit in several groups, and every slice stays the same size, so each dish in the chosen group has the same chance.

Deciding together: couples, families and roommates

As a couple

Each of you vetoes two dishes, then the wheel picks from what is left. Nobody has to decide, and nobody gets overruled.

With kids

Let a different child press Spin each night. A dinner chosen by the wheel is easier to sell than one chosen by a parent.

With roommates

Make the shared Sunday dinner a ritual: one spin for the menu, then the chore wheel decides who cooks and who washes up.

Eating out

Swap dishes for nearby restaurants. After the meal, the who pays wheel takes over.

Plan a week of dinners with no repeats

Turn on Elimination mode in Settings: every dish that comes up leaves the wheel, so seven spins give you seven different dinners. Type the days of the week in “Result titles”, one per line, and each result is labeled with its day. Prefer a single spin? Set “Winners per spin” to 7. The Results tab keeps every pick for your shopping list.

Is the food wheel really random?

Yes. With the full list, each dish has exactly 1 chance in 30, about 3.3%. The winner is drawn by your browser’s cryptographic random generator before the wheel starts moving, and the animation simply lands on it. Pizza two nights in a row is not a hidden setting: any result repeats on the next spin 1 time in 30. The wheel fairness page runs thousands of spins to show it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decide what to eat?

Shrink the choice first. Remove what you ate this week and anything that needs ingredients you don’t have, then pick a chip for your time and budget, and spin. If the result disappoints you, cook the dish you thought of at that moment: that was your real craving, and you found it in seconds.

Can I remove foods I don’t like?

Yes. Delete the line in the editor, or add a tilde at the start, like ~Sushi, to hide it without losing it. In list view, untick “in the wheel”. Your edited wheel is saved automatically under “My wheels” on your device, while this page keeps the original list for next time.

Can I plan meals for the whole week?

Yes. Switch to Elimination mode and spin seven times: a dish that has come up cannot come back until you reset the wheel. Add the days as result titles to get “Monday: Ramen”. Or set seven winners per spin for the whole week in one go, then copy the Results tab into a note.

Are there vegetarian ideas on the wheel?

Several dishes are meat-free or easy to make meat-free: veggie stir-fry, lentil soup, falafel wrap, vegetable couscous, omelet, mac and cheese, breakfast for dinner and a bean burrito bowl. For a fully vegetarian wheel, delete the meat and fish lines, then add your own favorites such as dal, chickpea curry or mushroom risotto.

Can I spin between restaurants instead of dishes?

Of course. Replace the dishes with restaurants or cuisines, one per line. To favor a place, end its line with *2: its slice doubles in size and every option’s percentage is shown. Share the wheel by link or on WhatsApp so the whole group can see what is on it before you spin.
