What are icebreaker questions for?

Icebreaker questions are short, easy prompts that get people talking at the start of a meeting, a workshop or a new school year. A good one takes less than a minute to answer, has no wrong answer and tells the group something human about the speaker. This icebreaker questions wheel holds 100 of them, sorted into three sets: Work, Fun and School.

The slices show numbers so the wheel stays clean on a shared screen, and the full question appears in large type when it stops, readable from the back of the room. Elimination is switched on, so a question that has been asked leaves the wheel and the conversation never loops.

How to use the icebreaker wheel

  1. Pick a set: Work, Fun, School, or “All 100”.
  2. Press F or the Full screen button so everyone can read the question.
  3. Spin, read the question aloud and let the first person answer.
  4. Spin again for the next person. “Reset all” brings every question back for your next session.

The 100 icebreaker questions

With “All 100” selected, the number in front of each question is the number on its slice. Some questions belong to two sets, for example “Are you a morning person or a night owl?”, which works with colleagues and pupils alike.

Icebreakers for remote meetings

On a video call, share your browser tab with the wheel in full screen. Spin once per person and keep answers to about 30 seconds, so a team of eight is done in five minutes. To decide who speaks next without awkward silences, load your attendees into the random name picker in a second tab. With more than 15 people, ask everyone to answer in the chat instead of out loud.

Training sessions and workshops

Trainers use the wheel in three moments. At the start, pairs spin a question, chat for two minutes, then each person introduces their partner. After lunch, a quick Fun question wakes the room up. At the end, a Work question such as “What is one habit that makes you more productive?” turns into a takeaway. For group activities, the random team generator forms the break-out groups in one click.

First day of class

Tap the School chip for questions written for pupils, from “Which animal would make the best class pet?” to “What advice would you give to a new student?”. Sit in a circle, spin, and let each child answer before passing the turn. With younger children, read the question aloud yourself, or switch on “Read the winner aloud” in the settings. Older students who want something livelier can move on to would you rather questions.

Is the icebreaker wheel random?

Yes. On the first spin each of the 100 questions has a 1 in 100 chance; because Elimination is on, the next spin draws from the 99 that remain, and so on. Every pick is made by your browser’s cryptographic random generator before the animation starts, so the host cannot steer it toward a favorite question. The fairness page explains the method.

Frequently asked questions

What is an icebreaker question?

An icebreaker question is a light, open question asked at the start of a meeting, a class or an event to help people relax and learn something about each other. It should be easy to answer in under a minute, never embarrassing and never about private topics such as health or salary. “What was your dream job when you were ten?” is a classic.

How much time should I plan for icebreakers?

Count about 30 to 60 seconds per person and per question. For a team of six, five minutes is plenty; for a class of 30, ask half the class today and the other half tomorrow, or have pupils answer in pairs. In a long workshop, plan a second short round after the break rather than one long round at the start.

Does the icebreaker wheel work on video calls?

Yes. Open the page, switch to full screen and share that browser tab in your video call tool. Everyone sees the wheel spin and the question appear. You can also send the link to participants: the wheel runs in any browser, on phones too, with no app and no account. Ticking “Read-only link” in Share stops anyone from editing the questions.

Can we add our own questions?

Yes. Open the editor and type your questions, one per line, or delete the ones that do not fit your group. Your version is saved automatically on your device in “My wheels”, so it is ready for the next meeting. Questions can be up to 120 characters, and the wheel accepts up to 5,000 entries.

What are good icebreaker questions for work?

The best work icebreakers are positive, quick and inclusive: “What is a small win you had this week?”, “Which app could you not work without?” or “What would your out-of-office message say on your dream trip?”. Avoid questions about family, religion or money. Tap the Work chip to keep only the 42 questions that suit colleagues.
